The record-breaking amount of travelers is expected after the recent 4th of July holiday weekend in the US. AAA estimated that over 70 million people traveled at least 50 miles away from home, which is higher than the figures recorded in 2023 and 2019. And the majority of these travelers were expected to be on the roads/air/rails on Sunday, July 7th.
According to the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), more than 3 million people are expected to travel through the country’s airports on Sunday. This could break the previous record of 2.9 million that was set on June 23.
Traveling on Sunday might be more difficult because of the AMTRAK shutdown & the Sumner Tunnel closure. Yesterday, a power outage made AMTRAK stop its service between Penn Station in New York and South Station for most of the day. The service started again around 9:45 PM, and it disturbed many people’s travel plans.
AAA also says that the worst time to drive today (7 July 2024) is between 2 PM. and 8 PM. The best time to drive is before 11 AM. Tomorrow, you should avoid driving between 1 PM and 5 PM. It is better to drive after 7 PM.
During the shutdown, the T (subway), rail, bus, and ferry are either cheaper or free.
Gas prices are about 3 cents cheaper than last year, around $3.50 per gallon on average.
According to Hopper, about 3.7 million people are expected to travel by air on Sunday and Monday, and around 3.5 million will fly back home on Tuesday.
The Sumner Tunnel is closed at midnight on Friday and will stay closed until August 5th for a big $160 million renovation project.
About 39,000 people drive through the tunnel every day, especially those living north of the city who need to get to Logan Airport. The state’s Department of Transportation is asking people to use buses, trains, or ferries instead.
