Airport workers at several airports in Italy plan to go on strike on 5 July 2024. This could cause Flight Disruptions & cancellations.

Workers at Bologna, Venice, Milan Linate, Milan Malpensa, and Rome Fiumicino airports will be on strike from 1 PM to 5 PM on Friday, 5 July, while staff at the Calabrian airports of Reggio Calabria, Lamezia Terme and Crotone will strike for a whole day.

    Venice airport stated that:

“We inform our passengers that on Friday 5 July, due to a national air transport strike scheduled from 1 PM to 5 PM, scheduled flights may be delayed or canceled and security procedures and normal passenger and aircraft handling procedures may be delayed. For information about your flight, please contact your airline, tour operator, or travel agent.”

Similarly, Bologna Airport also updates passengers about this strike:

Italian flag carrier Ita Airways has canceled 24 internal Friday Flights, which include the Bologna-Rome and Milan-Reggio Calabria routes.

Air traffic controllers, represented by the ENAV labor union will continue the strike for another 24 hours, which may cause further disruptions. Moreover, worker representatives from airlines including Malta Air, which operates Ryanair flights, and Vueling will also be on strike.

ITA Airways, the national carrier, has already announced the cancellation of 133 domestic and international flights due to the strike. The airline is trying to reduce the disruption by offering some passengers an opportunity to get on later flights, so that at least 40% can travel on the same day (5 July) when their original flight was scheduled.

The Italian civil aviation authority, ENAC, has assured that some flights will be guaranteed during specific hours (07:00-10:00 and 18:00-21:00) despite the strike. Transport minister Matteo Salvini has said he is trying to solve the problem, asking for “common sense” to be used and saying that Italy’s summer travel season “shouldn’t be spoiled by strike after strike”.

Passengers traveling to, from, or through Italy on July 5 are advised to check the status of their flights and remain flexible with their travel plans.
